Under most circumstances, trading stocks in the Philippines requires some level of understanding of the fees before you can start.

Whether the prices of stocks you are trading increase or decrease, there are certain charges that you need to pay, which are mandatory, and hence, you must be well aware of such fees before beginning your investing efforts.

You have to be mindful that the profit and loss of shares can be volatile. If you are not careful, you could suffer more losses than expected.

First, you must know how stocks are defined under the Philippine Stock Exchange. The Philippine stock market trades stocks of all its counters using the ‘Lot’ concept.

Board Lot Meaning

Board Lot is the number of shares that you can buy in trading. It is typically 100 shares. This means there should be exactly 100 shares to trade and no less than 99 or more than 101. This applies to all types of stocks (common, preferred, blue-chips).

The board lot is also referred to as the round Lot.

How Do I Calculate A Board Lot?

To get to your board lot price, you will have to use this simple equation: N x BID + (N-1) x (ASK).

If you don’t understand the equation above, let me tell you how it works.

For example: If JFC stock is trading at Php10 per share, the board lot equates to 100 shares on around 100 shares and trip trade (buying and selling). This means that you can buy or sell 100 shares of JFC for Php1,000 without needing to adjust your order.

What Is An Odd Lot?

Odd Lot refers to the number of smaller shares than the authorized trading unit in the stock market. Odd Lots are common when the stock exchange allows such trading methods, creating odd numbers of shares at the end of each trade.

Under Philippine Stock Exchange, the trading of Odd Lots is NOT allowed.
